The first American women enlisted into the regular armed forces were 13,000 women admitted into active duty in the US Navy and Marines during World War I. Post WWI many women continued their roles as Yeomen in the US Navy with administrative roles but a smaller number joined the US Coast Guard. Part of their uniform was a foul weather deck cape and sou’wester hat. Amelia Earhart was pictured in 1932 aboard a US Navy vessel wearing the deck cape prior to atmospheric training in a diving suit.
